Truck Buying Guide

A practical guide to choosing a HOWO truck: what to define, what to compare and what to ask before you buy.

A commercial truck is a long-term business asset. This guide sets out the questions worth answering before you request a quotation, so the truck you choose fits the work and the budget.

1. Start with the job, not the truck

Write down what the truck must carry, how far, over which roads and how many trips a day. These answers narrow the category before you look at a single model.

2. Match the category to the work

  • Tipper trucks for sand, ballast, aggregates, soil and other loose materials.
  • Prime movers for pulling semi-trailers over long distances.
  • Rigid trucks for distribution and general haulage on a single chassis.
  • Cargo trucks with box, curtainside, wing van or refrigerated bodies.
  • Mixer trucks for ready-mix and project concrete supply.

3. Know which specifications matter

SpecificationWhy it matters
PayloadThe weight of cargo the truck can legally carry. It decides how many trips you need.
Gross vehicle weightThe maximum permitted weight of the truck and its load together.
Gross combination weightFor prime movers, the maximum weight of the tractor, trailer and cargo combined.
Axle configurationAffects load distribution, traction and which roads and sites the truck suits.
Engine power and torqueDetermines how well the truck handles loaded gradients and heavy combinations.
TransmissionInfluences driver comfort, fuel use and suitability for rough or long-distance work.
Emissions standardConfirm what the truck is built to and what applies to your operation.
WarrantyAsk exactly what is covered, for how long, and who honours it.

4. Think about total cost, not only price

Fuel, tyres, servicing, insurance, driver costs and downtime all add up over the life of a truck. See commercial truck operating costs for a way to think about them.

5. Compare quotations like for like

Make sure each quotation names the exact model and specification, the body and equipment included, the price, what is not included, availability, delivery and warranty. A lower price is only a saving if the trucks are genuinely comparable.

6. Ask about financing early

If you plan to finance the purchase, say so when you request a quotation. Terms, eligibility and approval depend on the provider. Read truck financing considerations before you commit.

7. Questions to ask before you pay

  • Is this the exact truck and specification I was quoted?
  • Is the price final, and what is not included?
  • When will it be available and how will it be delivered?
  • What does the warranty cover, and where is it honoured?
  • What documents will I receive and in whose name?
