A new truck is a large purchase, and most problems come from details that were never confirmed. Use this checklist before you commit.

The truck

  • The exact model, specification and body or equipment you are buying
  • Payload, gross vehicle weight and axle configuration for your loads
  • Engine, transmission and emissions standard
  • Confirmation that the truck is new, with no previous registration or significant mileage
  • Fuel capacity, tyres and standard equipment included

The seller and the paperwork

  • Who the seller is and in whose name the truck will be registered
  • Which documents you will receive, and when
  • Written confirmation of price, what is included and what is not
  • Availability, delivery date and who arranges delivery

The warranty and support

Ask what the warranty covers, for how long, and where claims are handled. Ask who can service the truck near you and how quickly you can get help if it breaks down.

Before you pay

Pay only against a written quotation or invoice that names the truck, and keep proof of every payment. If anything is unclear, ask for it in writing before you proceed. See also questions to ask before purchasing a truck.
